August 9, 2016- Luang Prabang

Because I went to bed at 10pm, I woke up at the ungodly hour of 5:30am! Luckily, the wifi was good, so I just went online until Tetsuko woke up at 7. We decided to go to the Morning Market, which was just outside our guesthouse. There was tons of produce for sale (truly a local market- not entirely for the tourists). Live & dead chickens, ducks, fish, frogs, crabs, snails, and unidentifiable creatures. We both love walking around markets and observing.

I got some red stick rice with shredded coconut and sugar, wrapped in banana leaves. It was delicious and I really like the consistency of sticky rice.

We decided to go to a restaurant/hotel called Indigo House for breakfast. I loved the decor and ambiance of the place. The food and coffee were really good.

After breakfast we wanted to get a massage at Red Cross (which was recommended by multiple places). It was easy to find but we were so hot and sweaty by the time we got there. It was really humid! When we got there we found out it opened at 1pm, not 9am like I'd read/seen online. That's when our unplanned adventure began.

We continued our walk, planning to make a small circle and head back to the guesthouse to relax for a while. At some point we took a right instead of a left and kept walking along what we thought was the Mekong river (Luang Prabang is on a peninsula) but we were really on the Nam Khan.

We were so confused when we asked someone where we were and she said on the Nam Khan river- so disoriented! But, there were a tons of cute shops so it didn't really matter. We knew we couldn't get too lost in such a small town. We passed some great looking coffee shops and restaurants (we'd just have to figure out how to get back to them, once we figured out where we were!). Finally, we figured out we were at the tip of the peninsula where the Mekong and Nam Khan meet! We met some young monks that had a lot of questions for us (they like practicing their English).

Mocha meets Cafe Latte
We stopped at Saffron coffee to rest and use the wifi. It was crazy to me that every shop, restaurant, and coffee shop had free (good!) wifi.

I love the look of the buildings
We got back to the guesthouse at 1pm, we rested, I showered, then we went back out to get a massage. The massage was 1 hour for 50,000 kip and not impressive at all! I don't think that Luang Prabang is the place to get massages, as there weren't any other places with good reviews.

Back at the guest house we got a delicious pineapple fried rice, then Tetsuko dragged me out to get a baguette just as it started to monsoon. At least I got to use my new rain coat (which can fit 1 baguette in each pocket!)

Around 8pm we went back out to the night market and got a noodle soup for 20,000 kip on the street.

We ended up walking over 23,000 steps that day! I really liked how accessible the town is and how we could go back and forth to our guesthouse so easily. Also, at some point during the day, we decided on our plans for the next few days.
